"It's a new format altogether," Petschnigg explains. ![]() Each original image is cropped by just 3mm to accommodate the full-bleed printing on the notebook's pages. It's Moleskine's first notebook with a 4:3 aspect ratio–and likely one of the first 4:3 paper notebooks out there, Petschnigg figures–which means that the digital sketches can be perfectly translated to the print pages with minimal scaling or shrink-to-fit funny business. The fold-out page style is borrowed from one of Moleskine's existing products, the Japanese journal, but the size and shape of the book are totally informed by the app. What's most interesting about the new notebook, however, is just how new it really is. And as users of the app internalize the option, both Brown and Petschnigg think they'll see users creating journals specifically with the fold-out format in mind. Georg Petschnigg, FiftyThree's co-founder, says there are all sorts of scenarios that benefit from this sort of immediate, side-by-side context: travel journals, fashion collections, story boards, presentations and study guides just to name a few. Inevitably, she comes away thinking about the work in a slightly different way. As a graphic designer, Brown says she'll often print out digital works-in-progress and live with them stuck to her refrigerator or plastered to the dashboard of her car. ![]()
